Over the years, TY Inc. has used different filling materials that contribute to their weight, texture, and overall quality. Understanding these variations can help you make informed decisions as a collector.
In the early years, TY Beanie Babies were filled with small plastic pellets known as PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) beads. These pellets are what give Beanie Babies their characteristic "beanie" texture, allowing the toys to be floppy and flexible, unlike traditional stuffed animals with firmer stuffing.
PVC pellets were used in Beanie Babies produced up until around 1998. For collectors, this is an important detail because Beanie Babies filled with PVC beads are often considered more authentic and, in some cases, rarer, especially in specific models. PVC pellets tend to make the Beanie Babies slightly heavier compared to later versions.
In 1998, TY Inc. made a change by switching from PVC pellets to PE (Polyethylene) pellets. This was largely due to growing environmental concerns, as PE pellets were considered a more eco-friendly alternative. The PE-filled Beanie Babies are lighter and less dense than their PVC counterparts.
You will be able to tell what sort of stuffing the Beanie baby has by checking the tush tag.
For collectors, knowing whether a Beanie Baby is filled with PVC or PE pellets can affect its value. Many early collectors view PVC-filled Beanie Babies as more desirable, as they represent the original manufacturing style. However, PE-filled Beanie Babies are more common, especially in later models, and they are just as soft and flexible, though often lighter in weight.
Some Beanie Babies were produced during the transition period from PVC to PE, which means certain models can be found with either type of filling. In these cases, the PVC-filled versions may be considered rarer and more valuable.
At Tenrec Studios whenever we are selling a TY Beanie Babies with PVC Pellets we like to include a picture of both sides of the tush tag showing the name and materials used. You can view our TY Beanie Babies for sale here
